PETER C. GLAWS, Ph.D.

SCIENTIST – ADVANCED STEEL PROCESS AND PRODUCTS
THE TIMKEN COMPANY
CANTON, OHIO

Peter first became interested in the steel industry while studying metallurgy at Lafayette College. After college, he immediately began building a career. “The steel industry appealed to me because it represented a natural transition from my academic studies and offered numerous career opportunities,” remembers Peter.

Today, Peter is a top scientist with The Timken Company and is responsible for developing and improving upon the clean steelmaking process. In addition to conducting research, he works with operations personnel on the metal shop floor and leads various teams.

After working in the steel industry for several years, Peter attended graduate school at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in metallurgy. Once out of school, he began his postdoctoral work at Australia’s University of Newcastle, where he worked with Geoff Belton, a leader in the study of the physical chemistry of steelmaking reactions.

After Australia, Peter joined Timken as a principal research engineer, working his way up to his current position. He enjoys the opportunity to constantly work as part of a team to accomplish tasks that make a difference in the lives of millions of people.

Several years ago, Peter led an exciting project to study the reuse of spent ladle and bottom pour refractories as slag conditioners. This innovative work saved the company thousands of dollars and helped the environment. This experience highlights why Peter believes in the steel industry and encourages others to come join in the fun. “My advice is to keep your mind open, explore opportunities and have fun,” concludes Peter.

Whether in Australia or Ohio, one thing is constant: the steel industry is a dynamic and exciting field that opens the doors to numerous possibilities.
