DAN GOODPASTER

HOT-CAR OPERATOR
MOUNTAIN STATE CARBON LLC – SEVERSTAL WHEELING, INC.
FOLLANSBEE, W. VA.

Over the years, the Ohio steel industry has provided opportunities to countless individuals. There are numerous stories of people whose lives have been transformed by steel. Dan Goodpaster is one of these individuals.

Today, Dan is a hot-car operator for Mountain State Carbon LLC, a coke plant owned by Severstal Wheeling, Inc. He is responsible for driving an electric car that hauls hot coke from the oven to a quenching station and wharf. Coke, ferroalloys, limestone and iron ore are basic ingredients in integrated steelmaking.

Growing up, Dan watched as many people, including his father, worked at the steel mills in Mingo Junction, Ohio. Dan remembers these individuals enjoying good pay and benefits and the chance to advance in their careers. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Dan returned home to begin his career in steel.

Dan joined Severstal Wheeling as a laborer. He eventually had the opportunity to move to the coke plant. He held various jobs everywhere within the coke batteries and eventually was promoted to his current position.

Dan enjoys working with his team and loves his job. “Every day, 100 guys go through these gates to work,” said Dan. “They work hard to build products for America and the world. I’m proud to stand side by side with them.”

The steel industry continues to provide Dan with opportunities to advance and grow. Recently, he was elected chairman of the grievance committee for Local 1190 USW. In this capacity, Dan is responsible for issues including contracts, discharges and terminations. Dan helps steelworkers handle both work-related and personal issues.

Dan is optimistic about the future of the steel industry. He has experienced both plant closures and the rebirth of the industry. He believes there are plenty more opportunities for growth within the steel industry, especially with the improvements in technology. Dan encourages individuals interested in the steel industry to continue their schooling and obtain as much vocational or college education as possible.
