OHIO STEEL COUNCIL WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS
COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 30, 1998) – Gov. George V. Voinovich has appointed three new members to the Ohio Steel Council.
The new members represent The Timken Company, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. and North Star Steel Ohio. Each will serve a two-and-a-half-year term. Karl P. Kimmerling, of Canton, is group vice president-alloy steel at Timken. He began his career with Timken in 1979 as an associate metallurgist at the Harrison Steel Plant, where he also held a variety of technical and operating positions. In 1987, Kimmerling was named assistant superintendent of labor relations and later held marketing and operating positions at Latrobe Steel Company, a Timken subsidiary. He was also named president of Canadian Timken, Limited, before assuming his current position in 1996. Timken is a leading international manufacturer of highly engineered bearings and alloy steels. The Canton-based company employs more than 8,300 people in Ohio. Thomas A. Helinski, of Wintersville, is vice president-primary operations at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. He is responsible for the coke plant, blast furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces, the continuous caster and the 80-inch hot strip mill in Steubenville and Mingo Junction, Ohio, and Follansbee, W.Va. He joined the company in 1972 as coke plant engineer and previously served as division manager of byproduct, coke and sinter; division manager of coke and iron; and director of coal, coke and iron ore. Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, which produces carbon flat-rolled steel, operates five Ohio facilities, employing 3,664 people. Jerry Goodwald, of North Lima, is the general manager of North Star Steel Ohio in Youngstown, a position he has held since August 1996. Previously, he served as plant manager and director of quality assurance and technical services at Koppel Steel Corp.'s plant in Beaver Falls, Pa.; manager of quality assurance and technology at North Star Steel Co.'s Houston, Texas facility; and general supervisor at North Star Steel Ohio in Youngstown. North Star is a new member of the Council, with steelmaking and seamless pipe operations in Youngstown. Its parent company is involved in the joint-venture North Star BHP Steel Co. in Delta. The Ohio Steel Council, appointed in 1991 by Voinovich, is a public-private partnership designed to strengthen ties among the steel industry, the state of Ohio and its citizens. The Council's member organizations are AK Steel Corp., Armco Inc. (associate member), CSC Ltd., LTV Steel Co., Lukens Steel (associate member), North Star Steel Co., Republic Engineered Steels, Inc., The Timken Company, USS/KOBE Steel Co., WCI Steel, Inc., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., the United Steelworkers of America, the Ohio Legislature, Ohio Department of Development, Ohio State University and Youngstown State University. |  | |
