Starting salary range: $45,000 – $55,000
Salary range in 10 years: $60,000 – $100,000
Degree/training/certificate required: B.S. in engineering, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical, etc., with steel industry experience
A candidate is promoted into this position after a few years of experience. Possessing strong leadership skills, area supervisors are responsible for motivating and coordinating large groups of workers and lower-level supervisors. In addition to their technical expertise, they must be good with people. They must be proactive in solving problems. And they must be willing to take charge of an operation and run it like a business.
The area supervisor is responsible for overseeing a cluster of unit operations. With direction from upper-level managers, the area supervisor works closely with shift supervisors.
The area supervisor also works with maintenance shift supervisors, as well as other maintenance crew members, ensuring that all units are running smoothly and that downtime is held to a minimum.
Opportunities for advancement are considerable. With promotions, salaries could well exceed the estimates above.
